Visas · O / O-A

Retirement visa

Americans aged 50 or older who want to live in Thailand year-round on savings or a pension.

Is it for you?

  • You're 50 or older
  • You have a pension, Social Security or savings to cover the financial test
  • You want to stay long term without leaving the country every few months

What you need to know

What it is
A long-stay visa for people aged 50 and over. The O-A is applied for from the US; the Non-O is converted inside Thailand and then extended.
Money
฿800,000 (about US$24,000) in a Thai bank account, or a monthly income of at least ฿65,000 (about US$2,000), or a combination that adds up to ฿800,000 a year.
Health insurance
The O-A requires health insurance covering at least US$100,000 (about ฿3 million) for first-time applicants.
Renewal
You extend every year at your local immigration office, as long as you still meet the financial test.
Reporting
Like most long-stay visas, you report your address every 90 days. It can usually be done online.
Watch out
Offices often want the ฿800,000 to sit in the account for a few months before and after the application. Rules vary from one office to another, which is where local help saves trips.

How we handle it

  1. We choose between the O-A (from the US) and the Non-O route (converted in Thailand)
  2. We help you open a Thai bank account and plan when to move the funds
  3. Insurance, police check and medical certificate, if your route needs them
  4. Application, then yearly extensions and 90-day reports, which we can file for you
